Boston Celtics are a big disappointment
Almost a year and a half ago, Danny Ainge made a big move when he traded Isaiah Thomas to the Cleveland Cavaliers and got Kyrie Irving instead. Also, in the same summer, Boston Celtics acquired Gordon Hayward from the Utah Jazz, so they were seen as a great contestant in the Eastern Conference. But then, Hayward got injured in the first game of the season, while Irving had some big problems too. However, the Celtics still managed to get to the Eastern Conference Finals where they lost in 7 games against the Cleveland Cavaliers, led by the great LeBron James.
Knowing all these facts, everybody expected Boston Celtics to be the greatest team in the East this season. Hayward and Irving were getting again into the rotation and LeBron went to the Lakers. As you probably know by now, this didn’t happen, Boston Celtics aren’t dominating the conference. In fact, they are in fifth place, after teams such as the Milwaukee Bucks and Indiana Pacers. More than that, Boston Celtics won just 37 games, which means they won 10 fewer games than the no. 1 Milwaukee Bucks.
Maybe some say that this is only the regular season and in the postseason they will start to be good again. This is possible but looking at the chemistry of the players, it is clear that something is wrong. As many analysts say, the biggest problem with the Boston Celtics is that there are too many good players. The young guys don’t want to accept having reduced minutes because of Irving and Hayward, while Irving is still learning how to be a leader. Also, the public statements of Kyrie Irving have been very weird, as he seems to criticize a lot his younger teammates.
This has been observed in the way that the team plays. When Kyrie Irving is in the lineup the team losses, while when he misses a game, Boston Celtics wins. This is the reason why a lot of journalists say that Kyrie Irving will leave Boston at the end of this season, choosing to go to New York or to Los Angeles. I don’t know what will happen but it is sad to see egos interfere again in the middle of a great team, and resulting in it falling apart. It will be interesting to see if Brad Stevens manages to recover this team and get it to the NBA Finals. But until then, the Boston Celtics are a big disappointment.
