Explaining Slovenia’s victory over Spain

Yesterday Slovenia was the favourite of the game against Spain and many people asked themselves why. The truth is that I expected a balanced game but I was sure that Slovenia has a good chance to win. In the first quarter when Luka Doncic accumulated 3 personal fouls and Spain had a small lead the things seemed to be “clear”. The expectation was Spain to have an easy game from that moment with Luka having limited minutes on the court, but Slovenia surprised anybody.

I will explain below why Slovenia victory didn’t surprise me at all:

  • Even if they have some absent players compared with the Eurobasket they won 4 years ago, Slovenia has a strong lineup. Mike Tobey replaced very well Anthony Randolph, Zoran Dragic his brother Goran while Vlatko Cancar grew a lot and is impressing by his numbers. Then, you have Klemen Prepelic, the sharpshooter that is able to kill you from the arc while he scoring all the free throws given. Jaka Blazic, Edo Muric and other guys are helping with their part.
  • Luka Doncic cannot be defended. If you reduce his points with double-team, he will make more assists and rebounds, so the damage will be the same.
  • Then on the other side, the Spanish squad full of NBA and Euroleague legendary players has not the ideal chemistry. Many old players, some of them like Rudy, Lull, Pau Gasol are playing after recovering from many injuries. The Spaniards’ roster is impressive but Slovenia showed enthusiasm, freshness and more energy at this Olympics.
