The best Spanish clubs in the Euroleague history are some of the biggest rivals in the history of sports like Boston Celtics vs. Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA, or Olympiacos vs. Panathinaikos in Greece. Any encounter between F.C. Barcelona and Real Madrid means another page of “El Clasico” no matter if it’s in the domestic league, Spanish Cup, SuperCup or the Euroleague.
Let’s see how is the situation of the local players involved for the next season by each of these two Spanish powerhouses. For the last years, Real Madrid has won the battle, having every season the best Spanish players and between them the Euroleague MVP, the bright kid Luka Doncic or international guard Sergio Rodriguez. But starting from this season it seems that the situation is in favor of the Catalans. They made the biggest hit of the summer signing Nikola Mirotic, a former Madrid’s player and Alex Abrines, who is back with the Azulgrana club. These two stars are by far the best local players who will activate in the Spanish league for the next season.
The ex-NBA-ers of F.C. Barcelona will be helped by Victor Claver, Pierre Oriola and Pau Ribas, decent role players who have spent the last year with the Catalan club and can come from the bench contributing a bit to the final result.
On the other side, Real Madrid stays now no so good. The veteran Felipe Reyes is 40 years old. Rudy Fernandez will be soon 35 and after the back operation he made a couple of years ago, he is not the same player. He doesn’t fly anymore, but he still can hit some decent shots from the arc. Sergio Llull is a good player but he is missing every year half of the games because of the injuries. The only player remained in good physical shape for the Merengues is the Cape Verdean Edy Tavares who is also Spanish naturalized.
From this comparison of the local players, F.C. Barcelona looks better than their rivals for the years to come.
