Rasta Vechta started with big ambitions the 2019-2020 basketball season. They were almost reaching the BasketballCL’s playoff finishing at the 5th place the group B at their first participation in the European competition. At the same time, in the German league, they were occupying the 6th spot when the championship was stopped due to the Coronavirus outbreak. A good season so far. But then things got radically changed for them.
During the lockdown, Rasta Vechta was forced to operate some important changes in their roster which took any chance for them to reach the higher stages of the Bundesliga. In front of the Final Tournament hosted by Bayern Munich, Rasta has the shortest rotation from all the teams involved, with only 10 available players. From those guys, Jarelle Reischell, Luc Van Slooten and Philip Herkenhoff are not amazing. So the quality rotation of Rasta Vechat will be shorter than ever.
The German squad have lost in the last months a lot of key-players like Steve Vasturia, who signed with the Lithuanian powerhouse, Zalgiris Kaunas, the experienced American guards Zabian Dowdell and Jordan Davis, and the role-players Kamari Murphy and Justin Ruffington. In their place, the club brought in the Polish Jaroslav Zyskowski, who previously played this season for Zielona Gora and Matic Rebec from Cibona Zagreb.
As we can see, Rasta Vechta had lost 5 players and replaced them with only 2 which makes me think they are resigned in front of the Bundesliga’s Final Tournament. There are 2 groups, each one consisting of 5 teams and 4 of them will qualify for the quarter-finals of the competition. In order to do so, Rasta Vechta has to beat a team between Fraport Skyliners Frankfurt, MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg or Brose Bamberg, because against Alba Berlin they have no chance. Tough mission, especially when other teams came with larger roster of 12-13 players, while Vechta has only 10.
