Liga ACB forced by a judge’s decision to accept Gipuzkoa Basket
Gipuzkoa deserves to be in the first league of Spain, they have made a true effort to be there and this has to be recognized and awarded in the right way. They are a small team, but brave and against all odds, they will play in LIGA ACB next season.
This moment is one of the triumph of justice in front of business interests. Gipuzkoa Basket won in the civil court their participation in the next Spanish league’s season. A judge from Barcelona established that Liga ACB has to introduce IMMEDIATELY the team from San Sebastian on the list of the clubs that will participate in the 2020-2021 basketball season.
Initially, the representants of the 18th Spanish clubs have voted against the including of Gipuzkoa Basket in the first league, saying that more teams will be too much. But where 18 teams are playing there is space for 19 teams, especially now, when because of Covid-19 no team relegated to the second league of Spain. Ok, no club will descend, but it is the right of the clubs that made an effort to win the second league to reach a LIGA ACB spot for the next season: Gipuzkoa Basket and Carramimbre Valladolid. Nobody can cancel their struggle. The team from Valladolid has some financial problems, they could give up, but Gipuzkoa won’t!
I think the judge’s statement is a wonderful decision because this way there will be no discrimination for the small teams. During the last years, some of the European leagues had the tendency to become “rich leagues”, designed only for powerful, big-budget teams and this is not right. Each league has teams of different level and there is the beauty of a championship. You can have more surprises, some strong teams will rest some players and maybe they will lose against underdogs. This is the meaning of a real league to have different types of encounters.
