Meaningless acts of violence doesn’t help basketball

The final moments of the encounter between Crvena Zvezda and Partizan were again like many other times affected by the rage of the fans. The crowd and the players were involved in pointless altercations. The fans of Crvena Zvezda threw some objects on the court against the players of Partizan and then some of those players responded showing the middle finger and other gestures of protest.

It is a pity that the basketball and the sports spirit can be so affected and the rivalry on the court cannot be processed in a smart way. Nobody should consider the other team as an enemy. You can encourage your club, putting some pressure on the opponents, but throwing objects on the court and making obscene gestures is far away from education and dignity.

3 weeks ago, I was in Bilbao to see the Final 4 of the Basketball Champions League. At the end of the final act, Tenerife received standing ovations from Baxi Manresa fans, even though Manresa lost the game. 5000 people from Manresa didn’t leave the arena but stayed there giving big applause to the true winner Lenovo Tenerife. It was an enormous act of fair play, accepting the fact that the opponents were better today. Basketball has to be like this, it is not only scoring, passing and rebounding. Basketball (and sports) have to be part of the culture.

I will place here below the entire video with the incidents:
