Sassari won the thriller overtime against Vanoli Cremona, entering the Supercup Final
In the first game of 2019-2020 Italian Basketball season, we had a very tough and intense match in the Supercup semifinal between Cremona and Sassari. There was everything in the match like scoring runs, comebacks and also overtime. Both teams added many new players and every coach stated that this first official game is very important for player`s morale and chemistry.
Cremona started the game stronger, leading with 7-0 and 18-7 in the first quarter. However, until the half-time, Sassari managed to reduce the gap to only three points, 49-46. In the third quarter, everything was even 20-20 and the last quarter begins at 69-66 for Cremona. In this quarter we had some very intense plays. First of all, Sassari managed to take the lead for the first time in the match, 71-69. After 5 minutes they lead 83-73, after many offensive rebounds made by Jamel Mclean and many great plays from Marco Spissu. But then Cremona came back with an 11-0 run, thanks to two shots from the three-point line made by Travis Diener. The match finished with 87-87, but in overtime, Dinamo Sassari won the game 101-94 after some good performances from Mclean and Dwayne Evans.
For Vanoli Cremona, the main scorers were Matt Tiby with 25 points, Travis Diener and Wesley Saunders with 16 points. For Dinamo Sassari was Dwayne Evans with 18 points, Marco Spissu and Jamel Mclean with 16 points apiece. For Sassari, there were other 4 players scoring in double-digit. The most important aspect of the game was the rebounds battle. Dinamo smashed their opponents winning the battle 50-27, including 24 offensive rebounds, which is a lot! Also, speaking about personal fouls Cremona had 28 fouls compared with Sassari’s 16.
The first match of the season announced a very intense and interesting season in Italy. Many teams made a lot of changes and improved their roster, as in case of Dinamo Sassari. They have a very good and balanced squad, coached very well by Gianmarco Pozzeco, a coach that implemented a fighting spirit and give to his players a lot of trust. He also extended his contract until 2022, so there are good times ahead for this team. Let`s see how they compete in the national competition.
