Gran Canaria rejuvenated with Pedro Martinez
Gran Canaria rejuvenated with Pedro Martinez
Gran Canaria is on the right path at the moment. The Euroleague game lost at F.C. Barcelona doesn’t prove the contrary. The Canarian team is now focused on the Spanish league, where they have a chance to reach the playoffs.
After coach Pedro Martinez took the lead of the squad, Gran Canaria improved a lot. They had 3 winnings in a row, at Tenerife, against Darussafaka and then against Unicaja. But this week they have 3 games in 6 days, so the best decision was to slow it down in the away game yesterday in Barcelona.
From far away it looks like a big blow because the azulgrana team smashed the visitors with a huge margin: 93-64. But I think, Pedro Martinez made an excellent job. He gave credit to the young center Aleksander Balcerowski, who in spite of being only 18 years old, was included in the five starters again. The same happened with Pauli Oriol, who start the game and played as well over 20 minutes. The old guard Albert Oliver was rested for this game and Nikola Radicevic spent also 20 minutes on the court. In the same time, Kim Tillie played only 5 minutes.
I trust Pedro Martinez logic and it’s better to try to beat Olympiacos in Gran Canaria than to struggle in order to cut the deficit away against Barcelona. And even better to try to beat MoraBanc Andorra in Liga ACB in the Sunday game. Because now the Euroleague is already finished for the Canarian team and all the energy has to be invested to reach the Spanish playoff.
