Could somebody beat Erman Kunter ‘s points record?

Erman Kunter. Because it’s summertime and the majority of the European competitions have a break, we will dedicate a column to the historical single-game points records in the different domestic leagues.

When you’re thinking about basketball records, the first name that passes through your mind must be the Turkish player and now coach, Erman Kunter. He holds the record for the most points scored by a single player in a game of any top-tier level basketball leagues, with a tremendous 153 points.

Erman Kunter was born in Istanbul, Turkey, on 8 October 1956. He started his playing career in 1975 with Istanbul Teknik Üniversitesi and in his rookie year, he was the Turkish League Top Scorer, a title he achieved 7 times during his career. After this sensational first year, he moved to Besiktas, a team where he played in 4 periods: 1976-1977, 1978-1983, 1986-1987 and 1989-1991. He was a 1.90 Shooting Guard and played all his career with number 10.

But, the record was established at another Turkish giant, Fenerbahce Istanbul. For Fenerbahce, he played between 1987 and 1989. The record was made in a Turkish League game against Hilalspor, on 12 March 1988. He scored 153 points, with 81 at the halftime and finished the game with 17 3-pointers. Fenerbahce won that game 175-101, with only 22 points scored by the other players of Fener. It was a huge performance and I think this record will never be broken.

He ended his career in 1992 at Çukurova Sanayi. In 1994 he started his coaching career with Darüşşafaka where he stayed for 2 years. He also coached Beşiktas and Galatasaray in Turkey and Cholet, ASVEL and Le Mans in France. His top performance as a coach was a French League title in 2010 with Cholet, a team where he stayed between 2006 and 2012.

This is the man who scored the most points in a single game in basketball history. What do you think? This record will be ever beaten?
