After leading with 53-30 at the break time the visitors from Varese melted like ice cream in front of the scoring machine of Sidigas Avellino. In the second part of the game, the host team put an amazing comeback, scoring 46-18 and eventually winning the clash with an unbelievable 76-71.
But at the halftime, the seeds of Avellino’s comeback were already visible because some of Varese’s players accumulated many fouls which prevented them to play many minutes in the second part of the game. As a confirmation, in the last minutes, Dominique Archie, Jean Salumu and Giancarlo Ferrero were out with 5 personal fouls and many other players of Varese had 3 or 4 fouls.
But the real difference between the 2 teams remains the value of their rosters. Even if they have ambitious and hard-working players, Varese is not a strong team. The roster is an average one, based on low-cost acquisitions. That’s why is not such a big surprise when they fall in front of better teams like Avellino, Virtus Bologna or Brescia. This is the level of the squad. The real surprise is that at the moment they occupy a playoff spot with 9 rounds remaining from Legabasket regular season.
