Asvel Lyon is low budget this season

This summer brought huge roster changes for Asvel Lyon Villeurbanne. The club parted ways with almost all their players. It was very strange they didn’t keep the young promising talent Victor Wembanyama, which is already on the radar of future NBA teams. But it seems that the budget didn’t allow too many options on the market.

The new Asvel-Lyon is – with 2-3 exceptions – all-French, made with veterans, some of them being ex-national team players like Nando de Colo, Joffrey Lauvergne, Charles Kahudi, Antoine Diot, David Lighty. They have experience and they know each other very well, which can guarantee good chemistry but this won’t be enough, especially in the EuroLeague. All in all, the roster is mediocre and not competitive for the Euroleague, where many clubs are spending a lot of money each year to reach glory. This year, Asvel Lyon has one of the smallest budgets for salaries among all the teams involved in the Euroleague.

The bad results are already seen in the French league where Asvel Lyon has lost already the first 2 games of the season against Ada Blois and Cholet. Both teams that have beaten Lyon could be considered low-level ones on a European level. Ada Blois is not playing in any European competition, while Cholet is fighting for a spot in Fiba Europe Cup.

With this weak start of the season, Asvel Lyon is showing us they cannot have any claim this year. In the EuroLeague, they won’t count at all for the playoffs, while in the domestic league of France, AS Monaco is much better.
