Virtus Bologna – huge mistakes in the end of the 4th quarter

Virtus Bologna is a strong team, with an impressive roster and I see them as a candidate for the Final 4, and why not for the title of Basketball Champions League. But for this is not enough to have 12 good players. It’s more important to control the moments of the clash, to have the solution for the opponent’s comeback in the last minutes, to play smart basketball. Which is not the case!

Yesterday, after leading the entire game against Promitheas, Virtus Bologna had 8 points advantage (83-75) and the ball possession with 2.29 minutes remaining till the end. But instead of managing the clock in their favour, Filippo Baldi Rossi shot quickly after just 9 seconds! Why? You don’t have a coach to tell you to keep the ball till the last second?

Then, instead of defending the most important shot that a desperate team can use in these circumstances (I mean the 3 point shot), Virtus gave space to the Greeks to make exactly that shot! It was 83-78!

The same mistake of non-defending the 3 point line was made again by Bologna at 84-78 with 52 seconds left when Langston Hall made another shot, taking the score to 84-81!

The next attack Kelvin Martin made an offensive foul and Promitheas gain the possession but Virtus had luck and they regain the ball. With 22 seconds remaining, Aradori missed both free throws for Virtus and with the same score 84-81, coach Pino Sacripanti decided not to take the visiting team at the free throw line with a quick foul! Better allow them another lucky 3 pointer to tie the game at 84 and enter overtime! So stupid, so against the minimum level of understanding basketball.
