Derrick Williams plays like a beast, but is embarrassing in key moments
When Derrick Williams signed with Bayern Munich it was really a big achievement for the German squad. After 22 rounds of the Euroleague season, he is leading Bayern in many categories: points scored (302), rebounds (88), fouls received (89) and index rate (335). He is as well the leader of the turnovers (30), but this will always happen when you take many actions on your own. Great all-time players had many turnovers, that’s not the problem.
The real issue with Derrick Williams is that he sometimes plays chaotic and takes bad decisions who ruins the entire game. For instance, in the last game played last week in the German league against Oldenburg, the ex-NBA star committed a silly foul at 3 point line on the last shot which allowed the opponents to score 3 free-throws and to win the game with 1 point. Nobody expected from such an experienced player to do so. But let’s see other facts about Derrick ruining the end of the game. This time in the Euroleague and I will post here as well the video to watch Derrick mistakes.
Bayern played at Baskonia and they were 6 points down with 42 seconds to play. The German team had the ball and they had to cut the lead, not just trying to win the game (which the refs wouldn’t allow anyway) but to lose at less than 6 points. Why? Because in the home game they have beaten Baskonia exactly by 6 (77-71) and both teams are fighting for a spot in the Euroleague playoffs, where the direct results will be decisive in case of a tie in the rankings. So, if Bayern could cut Baskonia’s leading at less than 6 points would have been perfect for them.
Bayern has the ball with 42 seconds to play. I don’t know why (maybe he doesn’t know too) Derrick Williams decided to hurry and committed a ridiculous turnover in the next 2seconds (his first mistake). Then, on the Baskonia’s possession, Derrick made a useless foul on Shavon Shields which means 2 free-throws given “for free” (2nd mistake). But Bayern scored on the next possession and cut the deficit back at 6 (74-68) with 5 seconds left from the game. Baskonia scored the final basket and won the game with 76-68, because of an offensive rebound caused by Derrick Williams disorientation, who slept on the court instead of going to secure the rebound on his own basket (3rd mistake).
These 3 mistakes made in the last 42 seconds, maybe a crucial moment for the entire playoff fight are changing completely the perception of the ex-NBA star. I think he was not – like many other Americans – domesticated. Here, in Europe is not enough to score slam dunks, making shows at the games. It is far more important to take the right decisions at the right time, to play rationally and not to make terrible mistakes who can ruin the whole team’s efforts.
